Adopt a BBD

  • Bruno
For those of us who work with rescue organizations every day, there is a sad, sad phrase that is often uttered about the single most difficult type of dogs to find homes for: big black dogs. No matter how lovely the dog is, no matter how perfect the temperament, many potential adoptive families overlook big black dogs at shelters all across the country in favor of dogs that have more unique coloring (blue! red! orange with stripes! white with brown spots!). This issue is so close to our hearts (we have a little black pit bull after all!) that we've decided to feature a weekly roundup of local BBDs that need homes. Their photos and links to their profile on PetFinder will remain on our site until these dogs find a home.

I am a cat person. I owned dogs as a child and teenager. The last dog I owned was a great dane. Huge bark. I haven't owned a dog since, due to their high maintenance. When my neighbors downstairs got a dog and left him alone on the weekends when they always disappeared he would bark 24hrs non stop. I wanted to shoot myself. His cries of lonliness were heart wrenching; I wanted to shoot them. So I did not complaing to the landlord (I wanted to be a good neighbor) Instead I told them about what the dog was doing in their abscence and that maybe they should take him with them when they left for the weekend. I told them he was suffering alone. Well they got another dog and left both of them alone on the weekends. Now I had two dogs barking and crying beneath me. My cats wanted to kill me. lol I told my neighbors that now they had two suffering dogs all alone. I still didn't complain to the landlord. Instead I bought earplugs for night time and turned up the volume on the tv or stereo to shut out the barks. But my heart still wrenched for those dogs. I did not want to complain because I did not want the dogs to be abandoned. I'm an animal lover and I am always concerned for the animal. I believe that dogs bark for a reason and it's usually the owners fault. I took the time and taught my dogs when not to bark, and let them bark when appropriate. I allowed them to bark when they were outside guarding the house. If you are a dog owner and truly love animals you get used to the barking. I never tethered my dogs they were free range. My parents made sure we had a high fence. I think neighbors need to be patient and even try to help each other solve the barking problem. Eventually my neighbors started taking their dogs with them on the weekends and I stopped worrying about their dogs. By the way, one night I vacuumed and played music after 12am and my neighbors complained to the landlord. Unbelievable. No good deed goes unpunished. lol Bought wireless headphones for the stereo so that I could have free range in my home when cleaning and pulled the carpet out and put down tile so that I could mop instead. Still vacuumed the area carpet after 12am. It was the only time I could clean my home. oh well I tried. lol So yes I am against debarking, but if there are only two choices debarking or putting down the animal, then I would choose the lesser of two evils. But I don't see that happening. I would sell and move. after all, when you adopt a pet you should it is a lifetime commitment. If you are not willing to go the distance don't get a pet.
Declawing makes me sick.
If you can't tolerate the noise coming from a neighbor get a house. Seriously.
